Plants for Hardiness Zone 6
Zone 6 winters are cold enough to satisfy apples and cherries yet mild enough for peaches, figs and persimmons, so this is one of our most versatile zones. Winters here bottom out around -10° to 0°F, typical of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, New Jersey, southern New England and the mountains of Virginia and Tennessee. Every one of the 364 plants below is rated for Zone 6, grown at our nursery in Cartersville, Georgia and shipped to your door.
Growing in Zone 6
What grows well in Zone 6
Peaches, apples, pears, plums and cherries all fruit dependably in Zone 6, and American persimmons, pawpaws and cold-hardy fig varieties extend the harvest into fall. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and grapes thrive, and pecan, walnut, chestnut and hazelnut trees all succeed. Dogwoods, redbuds and maples are the ornamental staples.
Planting tips for Zone 6
Both spring and fall planting work in Zone 6. Figs appreciate a south-facing wall or a winter mulch around the base, and peaches want full sun and quick-draining soil. Keep an eye on late frosts during bloom and be ready to cover small trees for a night or two.
