The American Magnolia tree is an ancient tree that existed in North America 95 million years ago to the present. It is revered for its glossy evergreen leaves, pyramidal shape, and lovely white, fragrant flowers. The Magnolia grandiflora is the state tree for Mississippi and Louisiana. There are many species of magnolia. The two primary groups are evergreen magnolia trees such as the American magnolia, and the deciduous magnolias, such as Japanese Magnolias.
