The Japanese Timber Bamboo, also known as Phyllostachys bambusoides, has thick walls and the capability to reach heights of 60 feet, or even larger on older clumps. The stalks of this bamboo plant can grow to be 5 or more inches in diameter, and while it is not as cold hardy as some of the other types of bamboo, it will still thrive in colder zones to around zone 7, so Japanese Timber Bamboo is a good southern plant.
