The European Fan Palm is the only palm native to Europe and is very cold tolerant. Considered cold tolerant to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. However, there are specimens hundreds of years old in Europe that must have survived dips well below 10 degrees and survive to this day. The European Fan Palm is slow growing, with light green to silvery colored leaves. This hardy palm grows as a multiple trunked plant. It usually will have a longer center trunk with smaller side trunks. You can, however, trim the side trunks to promote the center trunk to grow faster. This will reveal the beautiful brown and yellow main trunk.
The European Fan Palm is usually grown as a smaller palm bush, but it can reach heights of 8-15 feet and a spread of 6-10 feet at maturity. It is a great palm for growing in containers around pools or patios. It is also a good choice for growing indoors or outdoors as a foundation planting. The European Fan Palm tree is one of the most beautiful of the small hardy palms and is entirely under-appreciated and under-used in the United States. (Grows in Zones 7b-10. Refer to Zone Map.)
Grows in zones: 8 - 10.
